Shout Out: Matthew Pawlowski, care package organizer

Matthew Pawlowski is just 14 years old and is on the verge of becoming an Eagle Scout. The project he will be evaluated on involves building care packages for soldiers overseas.

Pawlowski will be collecting items from noon to 5 p.m., July 2 during the Mundelein Community Days Festival. He said his table will be in the Activity Tent

Q:Why did you choose this project?

A: I want to do something that helps a lot of people and I like to think I'm patriotic. A lot of people go overseas in the military and something that helps them would also make their friends and family feel good. Some people might think this is overdone, but I think after 15 years of war those troops tend to be forgotten.

Q: How did you set this up?

A: I made a call to the United States Marines recruiting office in Libertyville and Sgt. Christopher Bouloukos agreed to help me. I want to send 100 boxes — one per soldier — and he helped me build the list of items by telling me what it was like when he was deployed and describing the things he needed or that made him feel better.

Q: What are some of the items you're collecting?

A: Beef jerky, microwave popcorn, sunflower seeds, canned goods, coffee, sun screen, magazines, books, decks of cards, sports equipment, pillowcases, towels, bubble gum, batteries, shaving cream, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, chap stick, and many more.

Q: Is there anyone you look up to?

A: My grandpa, Jack. He's helped me a lot in Boy Scouts. He's an Eagle Scout and knows what it takes. I've actually learned a lot of life lessons from him. He's inspired me to give more than 100 percent whenever possible because staying true to your word and being known for excellence is important.
